BACKGROUND from the Isidro Annotated Old Testament: [The book of Deuteronomy contains] addresses delivered by Moses on the eastern side of Jordan in the plains of Moab prior to their entry into the promised land. Remember that, at this time, these were new generations of Israelites who needed to be reminded about the covenant which God had made with Abraham and the nation of Israel. Moses also was now almost 120 years old and about to die. So, he was speaking to a younger generation about God’s promises and their corresponding responsibilities to God.
